Sending Files to Users and Conferences

FirstClass allows you to send files to other users, and to conferences, by attaching them to messages in your mailbox or in conferences.

You can attach an unlimited number of files to a FirstClass message. You then address and send the message as usual. You can use the text of the message to describe the attached files. The file may be transferred using either the X,Y, or ZMODEM protocols, available with most terminal programs.

To send a file as an attachment, first create and address a message as usual. For more information, see the "Composing a message" help file. If you wish, use the editor to add descriptive comments about the file or files that you are going to attach. When you exit the editor, you are asked whether you wish to attach any files; type YES and press RETURN (on a Macintosh keyboard), or ENTER (on an IBM-compatible keyboard).

To transfer the file, you must select a protocol (the type of file transfer). FirstClass supports X,Y, and ZMODEM protocols. If you are sending a Macintosh file, you may also want to use the MacBinary format which encodes the special Macintosh specific information automatically. To do this, turn on the MacBinary option in your terminal program and type YES at the FirstClass MacBinary prompt.

If you have selected XMODEM, you are asked to name the file you wish to attach (Y and Z protocols do this for you). This name will be seen by the recipient, so you should use something that is easy for the recipient to understand. After pressing RETURN or ENTER, you will have one minute to begin the X,Y, or ZMODEM file transfer on your terminal program. Refer to your terminal program manual for instructions on transmitting a file.

When the transfer is complete, you have the opportunity to attach more files. If you are finished, type NO and press RETURN or ENTER.

You can send the message now, or you can file it in your mailbox for sending later.
